India’s star-off spinner Harbhajan Singh was left out from the 15-member touring party for Sri Lankan tour, owing to a hamstring injury when selectors, on Sunday, announced the squad for 5 ODI matches and a Twenty20 match.
Left handed all rounder from Saurashtra, Ravindra Jadeja, has been drafted into the side following a slew of prolific performances at domestic scene which saw his team reach Ranji Trophy semi-finals.
Jadeja, who bats in the lower middle order and bowls left-arm spin, accumulated 739 runs in nine ties at an average of 67.18, besides claiming 42 wickets, at 19.72 per scalp.
In Harbhajan's absence, Hyderabad left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha will lead the spin department, hoping to get adequate support from Jadeja at the other end.
On the other-hand, the five-member pace-attack looks quite formidable with Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma joined by Munaf Patel, Irfan Pathan and Praveen Kumar.
Kumar, who had hit a rough patch in the Ranji Trophy final against Mumbai, going wicketless, gets a surprise recall into the Mahendra Singh Dhoni led side, ahead of Laxmipathy Balaji and Sreesanth.
Barring the above mentioned two changes, rest of the team is same as one that had played the ODI series against England.
India toured Sri Lanka in July and August last year where the lost the Test series 2-1 but won the one-day series 3-2.
The squad is set to reach Lanka on January 26 to start the series of limited overs internationals arranged as a stand-in for the cancelled trip to Pakistan.
Team: MS Dhoni (capt), Virender Sehwag (vice-capt) Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, Irfan Pathan, Yosuf Pathan, Suresh Raina, Praveen Kumar, Ravinder Jadeja, Pragyan Ojha, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma and Munaf Patel
