Chandrayaan finds minerals on moon

Sunday, December 28, 2008 · 0 comments

Moon drops

The moon mineralogy mapper (M3), a scientific instrument of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) onboard India's first lunar mission Chandrayaan-1, found iron-bearing minerals on the lunar surface, the US space agency said on Thursday.

"The mapper spectrometer has beamed images of the Orientale Basin region of the moon, indicating abundance of iron-bearing minerals such as pyroxene. Using different wavelengths of light, the instrument has also revealed for the first time changes in rock and mineral composition," M3 principal investigator Carle Pieters said in a statement hosted on NASA website.

Data from the 7-kg mapper provides space scientists first opportunity to examine lunar mineralogy at high spatial and spectral resolution.

The Orientale Basin is located on the moon's western limb. M3 captured the data last week when Chandrayaan was orbiting the moon at an altitude of 100 km.

"The imaging spectrometer provides us with compositional information across the moon that we have never had access to before. Our ability to identify and map the composition of the surface in geologic context provides a new level of detail needed to explore and understand the earth's nearest celestial neighbour," affirmed Pieters, who teaches at Brown University in Rhode Island.

The mapper was selected as a mission of opportunity through the NASA discovery programme. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory designed and built the instrument at Pasadena in California.

"M3 will also help in characterising and mapping lunar minerals for knowing the moon's early geological evolution. Its compositional maps will improve our understanding of the early evolution of a differentiated planetary body and provide a high-resolution assessment of lunar resources," Chandrayaan project director M Annadurai averred.

M3 is one of the 10 instruments onboard the unmanned Chandrayaan, conducting experiments while the spacecraft orbits over the moon next two years.

Five instruments were indigenously built by the state-run Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), while the remaining six payloads are of foreign origin, including three from the European Space Agency, two from NASA and one from Bulgaria.

Chandrayaan was blasted off Oct 22 onboard the 316-tonne polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV-C11) from ISRO's Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota spaceport, about 80 km north of Chennai.

After traversing 384,000 km through the deep space for 18 days, the spacecraft entered the lunar orbit Nov 8 and its moon impact probe was lowered on the moon's surface Nov 14.

Essar withdraws Rs 15,000 crore Jamnagar SEZ plan

Tuesday, December 23, 2008 · 0 comments

Mumbai-based infrastructure conglomerate Essar group has withdrawn its plans to build a 1,125 hectare Special Economic Zone in Jamnagar because of the adverse economic environment, a commerce ministry official said.

The proposal was to set up a 16-20-million-metric-tonne-a-year petrochemical refinery at an investment of Rs 15,000 crore, one of the largest SEZ proposals, according to information available on the company's website.

The Essar SEZ had received "formal approval", a second-stage approval that means the project had land in its possession (an earlier stage is when SEZs receive "in-principle approval", when their plans are approved but the land has not been acquired).

Essar did not respond to an email questionnaire asking why it had withdrawn and seeking details of its alternative plans.

The development comes soon after India's largest realtor, DLF Ltd withdrew a "notified" SEZ in Delhi owing to doubts about its financial viability. Notification, which is the final approval for any SEZ application, makes the zone eligible for tax benefits under the SEZ Act of 2005.

Essar's project was, however, already facing a controversy over the declaration of land.

In August this year Essar had requested the Board of Approval, an inter-ministerial approval body for these tax-free enclaves, to reduce the area of the SEZ to about a fifth of the originally proposed 1,125 hectare. Essar also wanted the zone re-classified from its original multi-product classification to one for petrochemicals and petroleum.

The department of revenue, which has a representative on the BoA, said the zone did not have the land in its possession and wanted to know how the zone received formal approval in these circumstances.

In its meeting on August 1, the BoA, which is chaired by Commerce Secretary Gopal K Pillai, had decided to examine the possibility of the developer misrepresenting facts.

The SEZ is located at a region where about 70 per cent of India's imported crude lands through oil tankers. Essar already has a 10.5-million-tonne-a-year refinery at Vadinar in the area. Jamnagar also houses Reliance Industry Ltd's 29-million-tonne SEZ-based refinery and 33-million-tonne export-oriented unit-based refinery.

Essar's other SEZs in Gujarat include a 247-hectare engineering SEZ in Hazira, which is currently being developed.

Dreams of Pakistan-2020

Now I’m convinced Pakistan has a serious drug problem. There is no harm in dreaming but you should try to put a lid on it if they are too wild. According to their Daily Express newspaper, this is what the map of India will look like in 2012.

Hmm…? Lost for words? Hold your reactions will you see the 2020 version.

Nice. Atleast Kerala is putting up a fight. I wonder if this map includes Goa? Imagine what an Pakistan -(disputed) India cricket match would be like in 2020. We will have to still keep playing Dravid!

The Coldest Night of Kareena's Life

Monday, December 15, 2008 · 0 comments

Kareena Kapoor has been feeling the American chill - the waif queen has been shooting for a film in minus-three degrees temperature in Philadelphia.

In case you remember, Kareena shot for '3 Idiots' just months back with Aamir Khan in the cold and inhospitable mountainous terrain of Ladakh. She claims to have survived the “coldest night” of her life while shooting for Karan Johar ’s home production with Saif Ali Khan in Philadelphia last week. The film is based on the subject of terrorism and is directed by Rensil D’ Silva.

Since it had been snowing in Philadelphia, Kareena had herself covered with pullovers, jackets, shawls and boots. But still the chill has been getting to her bones. During a shoot last week, she shot till 2am in the morning with a crew of 80 people.

“It was the coldest night of my life… You’ve no idea what it was like in that heavy snowfall with a unit of 80 people. But it looked like heaven,” Kareena is quoted in a media report.

Kareena claims to be working nearly 20 hours per day to finish the film on time. She admits exhaustion is setting in, but she has plans to head for a holiday with Saif by December end.

The duo plans to usher the New Year in France. It would be just a week-long vacation.

India Creates History, wins first Test

Sehwag Man Of The Match

Sachin Tendulkar crafted his 41st Test century as India stormed to a magnificent six-wicket victory over England in the first Test in Chennai.

Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh (85) contributed an unbeaten 163 to the home side's 387-4 - the fourth highest successful run chase in Test history.

Resuming on 131-1, the hosts lost Rahul Dravid (4) to Andrew Flintoff early on.

But they could not capitalise on a wearing pitch and Tendulkar hit the winning boundary to finish 103 not out.

It was the highest successful fourth-innings run chase witnessed anywhere in Asia and also owed much to Yuvraj, who many doubted could replicate his one-day form in the Test arena.

Brown blames Pakistan militants over Mumbai

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown blamed banned Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba for last month's deadly Mumbai attacks as tension between nuclear-armed neighbours India and Pakistan simmered on Sunday. Pakistan said on Saturday Indian warplanes had inadvertently violated its airspace, but New Delhi later denied the incident and accused Islamabad of trying to divert attention. In talks with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi and later with Pakistan's Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari in Islamabad, Brown offered both countries help in tightening security and combatting terrorism. In Islamabad, Brown proposed a new British-Pakistan "pact against terror", saying "three-quarters of the most serious terrorist plots investigated by the British authorities have links to al Qaeda in Pakistan". "The time has come for action, not words," he said. Brown also said he had asked Singh and Zardari for permission for British police to question suspects arrested in both countries in connection with last month's Mumbai attacks. India, backed by the United States, has called on Pakistan to crack down on Pakistan-based militant groups after the attacks, in which 179 people were killed during a three-day siege in India's financial heart. It blames Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), a militant group it says was set up by Pakistan to fight Indian rule in the disputed Kashmir region, for the Mumbai attacks. "The group responsible for the attacks is LeT and they have a great deal to answer for, and I hope to convey some of the views of the Indian prime minister to the president of Pakistan when I meet him," Brown told reporters in India's capital. Islamabad has blamed "non-state actors" for the attacks and has vowed to cooperate with investigations, but has also repeatedly said anyone caught in Pakistan would be tried in Pakistan. Singh later said India wanted good relations with Pakistan but again urged Islamabad to do more to stamp out militant groups operating on its soil. "We want to normalise our relations with Pakistan," Singh told people at an election in the Kashmiri town of Khandroo. "There are some people in Pakistan who are always trying to launch such bloody attacks."

'Rab ne...' brings audiences back to theaters

Mumbai is still not in a cinema-going mood after the terror strikes, but movie buffs - and loyal Shah Rukh Khan fans to be precise - could not have given Yash Raj Films' much-awaited movie Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi a miss.

So if not in droves, they came in sizeable numbers for the first day first show to give the movie a decent and honourable opening in the city.

The opening collections here ranged from 70 per cent to over 80 per cent - and more in other parts of the country. According to initial reports, the collections were cent per cent in many centres in north India, especially Punjab, thanks to rapid advance bookings.

Yash Raj Films (YRF), which has suffered monetary losses after successive failures of its recent ventures, could not have asked for more. In one quick shot, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi redeemed its prestige. The credit for this, as many in the industry said, should go to the jodi (alliance) of Shah Rukh and the industry's most private filmmaker, Aditya Chopra - the duo that have given one of the biggest hits in Dilwala Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.

The film is Shah Rukh's first release of the year. Apart from this, it is the first Shah Rukh Khan-Aditya Chopra film in over eight years. They had last collaborated for Mohabbatein in 2000.

The trade circles, which earlier were a little circumspect in their opinion about the movie's probable box-office fate post 26/11, have now given the movie a thumbs up, saying it has brought a little cheer to Mumbai's prevailing sombre mood.

In spite of not being a run-of-the-mill Bollywood blockbuster, Rab Ne... is attracting audiences all over the country because cinegoers have been missing the nation's darling, Shah Rukh, the whole year and the breeziness he displays on the screen.

"Bollywood masala addicts may find Rab Ne... a low-key affair as it has no pungent sex and the picturesque locales YRF movies are known for, but what has marked it out is that it has identifiable characters and that makes it an intimate movie within the limited scope of the story," said trade analyst V. Verma.

YRF has two weeks to cash in on the enthusiasm the movie has generated among the audience before Aamir Khan-starrer Ghajini arrives. But by that time, Rab Ne.. would have consolidated its position at the box-office and be declared a superhit," said I.M Pannu, another trade analyst.

Reactions to Rab Ne..., however, was not as enthusiastic among some young audience members. I know 'experimental' may not be the right word to sum up the movie, but somehow I found the movie to be a tepid fare, lacking in the usual grandeur of a Bollywood movie. In totality, I would say the movie is okay " she added.

Terrorist Kasav's mother speaks to press

Ajmal Amir Iman, the lone terrorist captured for the Mumbai terror attacks, told residents of his village in Pakistan's Punjab province during his last visit there that he was going away for 'jihad.'

Iman, also known as Ajmal Kasab, visited Faridkot village in Okara district of Punjab (Pakistan) about five months ago and asked his mother to bless him before he embarked on jehad.

"He came to the village about five or six months ago. He told his mother he was going away for jihad. He asked her to bless him and to leave his fate in the hands of Allah," said an unnamed resident of Faridkot in a secretly filmed footage.

Most people of Faridkot and nearby Depalpur sub-district were reluctant to talk about Iman on the record. However, in the secretly filmed footage, some residents were shown discussing his last visit to the village.

"A man from Faridkot said that on his last visit to the village, Ajmal gathered a group of boys near a school and asked them to catch him. He demonstrated feats of wrestling to them. Then we heard he had left home and joined a jehadi group," a man said.

A village elder shown in the footage said Iman's father Amir Kasab had moved to Faridkot from the nearby Haveli Lakha. Amir Kasab used to sell 'pakoras' from a hand cart that he pushed around the village, the elder said.

The president of the press club in Depalpur too confirmed in secretly filmed footage that Iman was from Faridkot. The channel also quoted residents of Faridkot as saying that Iman's father had confirmed to several people that the gunman whose pictures were shown in the media was his son.

‘Geo News’ beamed footage of what it said was a large number of operatives of intelligence agencies who were present in Faridkot. It also aired footage of intelligence operatives deployed outside Iman's home.

Multiplexes have big expectations from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

It's not even 24 hours since Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi released across cinemas worldwide and the first set of positive reactions of the cinema owners from Mumbai have started to pour in about the film, the actor and the director. Bollywood Hungama got a few first hand reports after the first day first show from the men behind Cinemax, PVR and Fame.

Mr. Devang of Cinemax who saw the film told us in a joyous tone, "Rab Ne... is a fantastic film. Once again, Adi and SRK have proved that they rule the box office. The film has got a repeat value and people are flocking to see the film especially in our red lounge where all shows are house full. It goes to show that SRK can change the seats and pull back the audience. We have also got a meet and greet SRK contest if you buy a combo meal pack and drop in your coupon in the drop box. Such offers usually attract a lot of attention. We expect a lot more crowd in the weekends which will be a good sight after what's happened lately". Mr. Joshi of PVR cinemas who loved the start and the end of the film informed, "There is increased security at the cinemas and it's nice to see audiences coming with their family to see this entertaining film with their favourite hero, Shah Rukh Khan. His magic has once again worked with Yash Raj Films. We have had a very strong opening in all our sites and expect a lot more in the days to come by a strong word of mouth". Our last comment came from Mr. Abhishek Raina of Fame who gave us an interesting point of view, "I feel the only reason that people are coming to the cinemas to watch Rab Ne… is because this is Shah Rukh's first film of 2008 and very few people seem to know that. Surely expectations are bound to double up. It's SRK in a never before seen role with a different look and a funny hairstyle. He has put the smile back on the faces of the people. Both Aditya Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan have packaged the film very well and because of a long gap till the next big film releases on December 25, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi seems to be a clear winner with more number of shows running at the multiplexes".

With 'Rab' listening to the cinema owner's prayers 'haule haule', it's time that SRK, Adi and the rest of the cast and crew enjoy the positive outcome on the first day of their film's release.

SRK talking about Gauri and his children-Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

Shah Rukh Khan strongly feels that in spite of the superstardom, he is still an ordinary man, leading an ordinary life with his wife Gauri. But there is something that he thinks is very extraordinary about his life and that is his children — 11-year-old Aryan and 8-year-old Suhana.
Shahrukh Khan is always seen speaking about his films and projects but this time Shahrukh Khan told about his family and his kids in a recent interview.
SRK states that his life with Gauri became extraordinary when their kids came into their life, he says, “Gauri and I have spent almost a quarter of a century together. We got married in 1991, so it has been 17 years of marriage now. There seemed nothing extraordinary about our life or marriage, till the children came along.”
Shahrukh Khan continues, “Perhaps only Gauri and I find them special, just like all parents feel their child is special, but I still think it’s a miracle. People often think it’s no big deal to have kids, every one has them. But Gauri and I think it’s a miracle and we cannot believe what we have achieved.”
He further added, “We still look at Aryan and Suhana and we wonder how we managed to produce them. Aryan looks just like Gauri and Suhana looks like me. So it is as if we have managed to produce clones of ourselves. Gauri and I are not very smart people though. We have come together to make these extraordinary, special children. they are growing up so fast and yet we feel that we are still the same people when we had met.”

Mahendra Singh Dhoni and John Abraham in the film ‘Hook Ya Crook’

The news is that John Abraham and Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni are going to act in a film titled ‘Hook Ya Crook’. The film is inspired from the 1981 Hollywood film, ‘Escape to Victory’, which featured football star Pele.
Writer Rensil D’Silva has adapted the film for an Indian audience. The prison set is currently being built by art director Samir Chanda in Hyderabad. ‘Hook Ya Crook’ is supposed to be an authentic cricket film with a big cricket match as the climax. Dhoni is playing a leading role in the film.
A source reveals, “UTV, who had earlier made Goal, a football-based film, want Hook Ya Crook to be an authentic cricket film. The climax will be a huge cricket match like Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lagaan. Indian cricket captain Dhoni is being brought on board to share the field and cinema space with the rest of the cast and also to help his teammates give a believable spin to the game.”
David Dhawan, the director of the film stated, “Cricket does play a very important part in my film. This would be my most uncharacteristic film, very different from the comedies I am associated with. John Abraham and Uday Chopra will come together again after Dhoom. Aditya Pancholi has an amazing role. The audience will love him.

Indian Navy repulses attack on ship off Somalia

Friday, December 12, 2008 · 0 comments

In another successful anti-piracy operation, Navy warship on Saturday repulsed an attack on a merchant vessel in the Gulf of Aden and nabbed 23 Somali and Yemeni sea brigands, in a show of resolve to weed out the menace that affected maritime trade in the region.

The pirates on two speed boats had surrounded the merchant vessel flying the Ethiopian flag around noon, when INS Mysore warship intervened and warded off the attack, Navy spokesperson said here.

The pirates had fired at the merchant vessel with their small arms, when it sent out a rescue call and the Indian warship, which was sailing nearby moved its Marine Commandos on an helicopter to help the distressed cargo vessel, he said.

The attack took place about 150 nautical miles off Aden and INS Mysore was about 13 nautical miles away from the merchant vessel when it picked up the SOS call.

The Navy flew its Marine Commandos on helicopters to the scene of the pirate attack and rescued the ship. MV Gibe was later escorted to safety, he added.

The Naval commandos also boarded the pirates' boats and seized seven AK-47 assault rifles, two other rifles, a grenade launcher and 13 fully loaded magazines of ammunition from the 12 Somali and 11 Yemeni pirates on board the two pirate boats.

Further search for other pirates, who fled from the spot following the Indian Naval intervention, was in progress, the spokesperson said.

Last month, Navy warship INS Tabar, a missile-frigate, had sunk a mothership of the pirates and had also rescued two merchant vessels that were under attack from the sea brigands.

Rab Ne Bana De Jodi sweeps the nation

Yash Raj Films reeling under the impact of a series of setbacks in 2007-2008 is all set to make a
grand comeback with his latest big-time release Rab Ne Bana De Jodi.

In spite of the terror attacks two weeks ago and the downward curve in Yash Raj's recent image, the film had a massive opening which is expected to get better over the weekend and past it.

Roshan Singh a leading exhibitor of Bihar sums up the unexpected euphoria surrounding the latest Shah Rukh Khan starrer. "It's opened to full houses, the best opening I've had for a Yash Raj Film in the last two years. I should know, because my theatre screens all the Yash Raj films in Patna. People love the film. Nobody expected Rab Ne... to be such a sweet love story. Shah Rukh as an ordinary small- town guy proves he is truly the king. And the new girl Anushka is a revelation."

What's working for Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is the working-class ambience. The film delineates the dreams and aspirations of ordinary people.

"And the whole idea of putting the couple into a dance reality-show is a stroke of genius. Audiences immediately identify and connect with this new medium of getting famous overnight," says Roshan Singh.

In Mumbai, the responses on Friday ranged from exceptional to very very good. Said the Singh Is Kinng producer Vipul Shah, "I'm not surprised by the warm welcome that the film has got. After 26/11 Mumbai needed a feel good film. And the Shah Rukh-Aditya Chopra combination after eight years....Their last film together was Mohabbatein. I was really looking forward to the film. We don't get a film from the team that gave us Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge that easily."

With the heartening opening of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi the industry reeling under the twin impact of a recession and 26/11 can breathe easy.

The best reaction to the film's opening came from film's director Aditya Chopra and leading man Shah Rukh Khan's best friend Karan Johar in New York. "Rab Ne Bana Di will prove once and for all that the Adi-Shah Rukh jodi is god sent."

Don't 'Rab' that combo the wrong way.

Movie Review : Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

RAB NE BANA DI JODI is vey desi at heart with a strong start and an equally strong emotional end. Having said that, you cannot deny the fact that you expect much, much more from Aditya Chopra. RAB NE BANA DI JODI is no DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE, it's not MOHABBATEIN either. It's lower than that! At the box-office, the business will be better at some multiplexes, while the single screens will be below average. The business in Overseas, however, should be better, but the business in India will totter, tremble and fumble after the initial weekend.

One often cribs about Yash Raj repeatedly casting SRK in similar roles, in film after film. However, this allegation is far from true. Right from DARR to CHAK DE INDIA, the combination has collaborated on varied subjects. With RAB NE BANA DI JODI, they take this association to another level altogether.

To start with, RAB NE BANA DI JODI brings back the golden team of DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE and MOHABBATEIN after a hiatus and the only parallel you can draw with the earlier achievements is the fact that each of them is a love story. Otherwise, RAB NE BANA DI JODI is truly different. It's not set in London or Switzerland, there's no sarso ke khet, it's not about a good looking couple sporting designer outfits and accessories, there's no parental opposition either.
Like SRK does a 360 degree turn in the movie, Aditya Chopra too does a complete turn as far as the story is concerned. Seeped in Indian emotions and traditional values and very desi at heart, RAB NE BANA DI JODI is a complete departure from the good-looking, picture perfect YRF movies that sport glam bodies parading designer outfits.

For the present-day generation, a story like RAB NE BANA DI JODI may come across as an original piece of work, but if you've been a keen observer of films of yore, you can't help overlook the similarities with Dr. V. Shantaram's NAVRANG and more precisely, Raj Kapoor's SATYAM SHIVAM SUNDARAM. In fact, RAB NE BANA DI JODI also brings back memories of the low-cost MAIN MERI PATNI AUR WOH [Rajpal Yadav, Rituparna Sengupta], not in terms of story, but in terms of characters.

Director Aditya Chopra chooses a desi plot and weaves a story around an ordinary, middle class couple. The story begins with gusto and the initial scenes between Shah Rukh and Anushka are thoroughly interesting. But the screenplay falters the moment Shah Rukh's character Surinder transforms into Raj and his personality undergoes a sea-change. The first question that strikes you is, why didn't Anushka realize it's him, her husband, not someone else? Sure, he has undergone a complete makeover, but how can you not recognise your husband's voice or appearance? That's a glaring flaw, it's like taking the viewer for granted!

Shah Rukh is superb as the simpleton and your heart goes out to him every time he appears on screen. You want the underdog to win and here too, the way SRK tackles this part, you're all the more convinced. As Raj, SRK goes overboard at times. Anushka looks the character and surprises you with a confident performance. It's no small achievement to share screen space with an actor of the calibre of SRK and Anushka manages it very well from start to end. Vinay Pathak is incredible. He contributes enormously in making the proceedings lively.

On the whole, RAB NE BANA DI JODI is vey desi at heart with a strong start and an equally strong emotional end.

Maria Yuryevna Sharapova, as everyone knows is a former World No. 1 Russian professional tennis player.

Sharapova has won three Grand Slam singles titles. As of July 2008, she is the world's highest-paid female athlete.

She lists fashion, movies, music and reading the Sherlock Holmes and Pippi Longstocking series as among her off-court interests, while she has also talked in the past about how she takes hip-hop dance classes.

In April 2005, People Magazine named her one of the 50 most beautiful celebrities in the world.

In 2006, Maxim magazine ranked Sharapova the hottest athlete in the world for the fourth consecutive year. She posed in a six-page bikini photoshoot spread in the 2006 Valentine's Day issue of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, alongside 25 scantily-clad supermodels.

In a poll run by Britain's FHM magazine, she was voted the seventh most eligible bachelorette, based on both "wealth and looks."

Maria Sharapova was the Hottest Olympic athlete of 2008.

The Beijing Olympics brought fame, glory, immortality. The whole world watched the grandeur of the athletes winning their wreaths.

And the participants were not half bad looking either.

The Olympics are over... but you need not feel glum... for we remind you once again of the uber hot mamacitas... aka, the barn burning hottest Olympian athletes of the 2008.

Sit back, pop open a bottle of a cold drink and read on.

Tatiana Golovin is a French Tennis Player of Russian descent.

She has won the 2004 French Open mixed doubles event with fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet, and has also reached the singles quarterfinal at the 2006 U.S. Open, losing to Maria Sharapova.

Ghajini- Movie Preview

How do you go about avenging someone you don’t remember? Ghajini is one such tale of love and vengeance of a man who suffers from memory loss.

The movie, starring Aamir Khan , Asin and Jiah Khan , is inspired from director Christopher Nolan’s film ‘Memento’. Director A.R. Murugadoss first made the Tamil adaptation of the film Ghajini (Tamil) in 2005. Interestingly, Murugadoss hadn’t seen ‘Memento’ but only heard its story when he made the Tamil flick. Therefore, don’t expect a rip-off of ‘Memento’ in ‘Ghajini’.

Imagine being one of the most successful businessmen in the country. Sanjay Singhania (Aamir) is a rich businessman who owns a cellular phone company. Kalpana (Asin) is a model who brags to her friends and peers that she is the love interest of Sanjay, though in truth she doesn’t even know the man.

When Sanjay comes to know about this anonymous admirer of his, he decides to dispel her delusions. But on his way he sees a beautiful woman helping the handicapped kids cross the road. Instantly, Sanjay falls for her. Later, he comes to know that she is Kalpana, the same model who boasted of being his girlfriend.

Sanjay gets introduced to Kalpana but doesn’t disclose his real identity. Love blossoms between the two.

While on a train ride, Kalpana saves a group of young girls from a rowdy bunch of eve-teasing goons. A few days later, the same group of eve teasers, led by their notorious head (Pradeep Rawat) close in on Kalpana. But Sanjay arrives and fights them. In the ensuing scuffle, Kalpana is killed and Sanjay is hit on his head with an iron rod.

Though Sanjay is able to survive the injury, he loses his memory. He gets only flashbacks of what really happened and his short memory makes it difficult to remember things he did just minutes back.

How does this man, who can’t even remember the killers of his ladylove, goes about taking his revenge is what the remaining story is about. Jiah Khan plays a medical student who helps Sanjay find the killers. The movie has music by A R Rahman and lyrics by Prasoon Joshi. ‘Ghajini’ is set to release on December 25.
